Use mobile devices safely
Considering how much we rely on our mobile devices and how susceptible they are to attack, you'll want to make sure you are protected:
• Lock your device with a PIN or password - and never leave it unprotected in public.
• Only install apps from trusted sources (Apple AppStore, Google Play).
• Keep the device's operating system up-to-date.
• Don't click on links or attachments from unsolicited emails or texts.
• Avoid transmitting or storing personal information on the device.
• Most handheld devices are capable of employing data encryption - consult your device's documentation for available options.
• Use Apple's Find my iPhone or the Android Device Manager tools to help prevent loss or theft.
To make your mobile devices safe you need to decide on a policy for your company on how you are going to manage your mobile devices. There are two different approaches to mobile device management.
Bring your own device (BYOD) – BYOD is allowing employees to bring their own personal devices phones, tablets, laptops, and USB drives and connect to your company network and access company information.
Mobile Device Management (MDM) – MDM is a software that secures mobile devices and allows you to manage those devices. MDM features include secure email, secure browser, remote wipe of company data, device locking, and many more.
While MDM is more secure than BYOD there are ways to make BYOD more secure. The first place to start is a written policy that you can share with employees. The policy should detail allowable use for mobile devices on your companies’ network and what types of devices can connect. The policy should be a balance between security and the employees’ personal privacy.
